For the longest time I feel like I saw flaxseed hair gel everywhere. I saw it at Target and Ulta from brands like Aunt Jackie’s, Pattern and Cantu. I saw countless DIY videos on YouTube all showing different methods on how to make and use it. Before I committed to store bought flaxseed gel I knew that I wanted to try making it myself first. It wasn’t until we went into lockdown that I finally decided to try it. And now I can’t live without it!

That’s right, it took me till I was bored out of my mind to give flaxseed hair gel a try. But I am so glad that I did! Making flaxseed hair gel at home is so incredibly easy and fast that I don’t even consider store bought anymore! Flaxseed gel has improved the health and the look of my hair so much and it will definitely be part of my routine for a long time!

Ingredients + Tools:
- 1/4 cup whole flaxseeds
- 2 1/4 cups water
- Rosemary essential oil
- Silicone spatula
- Small pot
- Fine mesh strainer
- Clean jar with screw on lid

Directions:
- Add whole flaxseeds and water to a clean pot. Over medium heat allow the pot to come to a boil. Should only take a few minutes.
- Using your silicone spatula stir the flaxseeds to make sure they’re not sticking to the pot. Once the pot reaches a boil allow it boil for about 3 minutes. Continue to stir and make sure the pot doesn’t boil over.
- Remove flaxseeds from heat and allow to cool for 30 minutes with the lid on.
- With the fine mesh strainer separate the gel from the flaxseeds. You want everything to still be warm but not hot so it separates easily.
- Transfer the gel into a clean jar with a screw on lid. I like to use an old raw honey jar.
- Allow gel to cool completely then add Rosemary essential oil. I usually use around 10 drops.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

How I Use Flaxseed Gel:
I use flaxseed gel almost every single day. I use it after getting out of the shower and pair it with my favorite Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Gel. I also use it in the mornings to refresh my hair during the week. All I do is gently smooth and scrunch the flaxseed gel into my curls, allow it to air dry and using a hair oil scrunch any cast away! This really helps redefine my curls and smooth out any frizz!
